About Us
Origins
Jerry Ramey started teaching chess at Roosevelt Middle School in 1993 and has since expanded the Southside Chess program to many schools in Eugene, Oregon. Thousands of children have participated in the program's clubs, classes and activities.
Teaching Philosophy
We aim to give students a fun-filled experience, but one which also emphasizes chess as an endeavor which enhances academic success. Chess is undoubtedly one of the world's most intricate and fascinating games, and has enough depth to occupy a lifetime of study. The study of chess serves to improve the lives of any who pursue it, so we feel very good about teaching it.
Achievements
We have been fortunate to have had many great students over the years. Currently, our players and teams have won over 80 State titles in various grade levels and divisions and three national championships. Just last year, 2023-24, we had two individual students to win state championship titles and several more among the top finishers. Many of or students have achieved high chess rankings and titles, including 'Master' and 'Expert.' We believe the study of chess prepares students for higher education. Many of our students have gone on to attend some of the most prestigious universities in the country.
Chess is for Everyone
We are comfortable working with very bright children and find joy in doing so. However, chess rewards everyone who is diligent, and some of our most satisfying moments have come from seeing the accomplishments of children who may never win a state championship, but who managed to exceed everyone’s expectations, sometimes including their own.
