Upcoming Events
Due to the Coronavirus, Southside Chess has suspended all in-person school chess clubs, accelerated small-group classes and tournaments until the schools reopen to full in-person attendance.
That being said, we have developed an outstanding online chess program in which your child can participate this school year. Our online classes using the video-conferencing software 'Zoom' in conjunction with the chess engine 'HIARCS' have had great results. We feel confident that our online program is as good as and may be better than in-person teaching.
One key is that our chess engine has an attractive chess board diagram which appears on the students’ screens and allows us to move the pieces around to explore different variations of the chess problems we study. The kids need something interesting to look at, and this fits the bill. We can also cover a lot of ground quickly.
Our program has various sections which will suit the needs of scholastic aged players of all skill levels and expectations. The BEGINNERS CLUB will be an economically friendly, easy-to-comprehend course designed for first-year players of any age and will help them understand the underlying tactics and strategies which make chess the world's greatest board game. The INTERMEDIATE CLUB will be for players with one or more year's experience who want to take their games to the next level. INTERMEDIATE CLASSES will be for experienced players who are serious about improving their skills and are interested in becoming successful competitive players. ADVANCED CLASSES are for serious players who are interested in becoming competitive against the best players in the Northwest and across the country. Most of our class sizes are small, so we can cover a lot of material quickly.
Players in both the CLUB and CLASS sections will be expected to play at least one online game each week. We will have a CHESS LADDER, and players may move up or down the ladder, according to their performances in those games. We will also have competitions between teams from different schools.
